What is DSL? Digital subscriber line (DSL) is a high-speed
digital telephone line that utilizes ordinary copper telephone lines.
Because DSL requires no special equipment, it's convenient for residential
and small business customers and generally costs less than other
types of high-speed services such as Frame Relay or T1.
Why should I consider DSL? DSL gives you dramatically faster
response times than dialup Internet access, especially when downloading
files from the Internet. DSL also costs significantly less than
other types of high-speed Internet access.
What are the various costs associated with DSL? Basic DSL
costs include a single monthly charge, plus a one-time installation
fee. You may need to purchase additional equipment such as a router
or a DSL bridge. Some DSL providers may tack on additional charges
for related Internet or data-communications services but not TCSN.
All your services come in one monthly invoice.
Which type of DSL is for me? There are several types of DSL
— ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line), SDSL (symmetric digital
subscriber line) and ISDL (integrated digital subscriber line) —
with varying upstream and downstream transmission speeds. If you
receive more data than you send (which is typical for most users),
choose ADSL. But if you receive and send large amounts of data,
consider SDSL or IDSL.
