Experience:

PASO ROBLES PRESS                                                                    24 years through 2002 

Responsible for publishing and printing the Paso Robles community newspaper as well as several other publications throughout San Luis Obispo County, California. 

Directed the day to day operations of a professional staff of up to 40 individuals and distribution of over 40,000 newspapers each week including 4,700 copies of the Paso Robles Daily Press every day. Ensured the proper functioning of business office, editorial and advertising departments, distribution, production and computer systems and networks. 

Carefully monitored and managed the financial aspects of the company.  Set up and analyzed precise financial reports of daily, weekly, monthly and annual operations. Using CPA-prepared financial statements, Inland Press Association statistics and common sense, adjusted operations to ensure profitability, sustainability and an appropriate community presence.  Worked diligently to sustain and improve the community in many different ways. Maintained community relations, developed and write articles and editorials to promote the social and economic health and welfare of the community.  Provided extensive supportive guidance in advertising, marketing and finance to local enterprises.   

Assisted, trained and encouraged staff in editorial news and feature writing as needed.  Participated in ad sales, negotiated wages, salaries and benefits.  Purchased supplies including ink, newsprint, computer enhancements, photographic supplies and other items.  Negotiated contracts for services of individual news and photo specialists, news services and syndicates, repairs, maintenance, electronic archiving and film, etc.  Collected bills as required.  

Responsible for staffing. Reviewed and approved all employment advertising, hiring and terminations.  Directly hired and trained all managerial personnel.  As a consequence of growing up in the business can and did fill in any position in unusual circumstances.

Managed the expansion efforts of the corporation including the acquisition, design and move to a new plant, established a branch office in a neighboring community, acquired an existing publication, set up a target/total market program and launched new publications.  

* On leave-of-absence over a one-year period, assisted the Humboldt Group bring two newly- acquired weeklies up to their standards in staff, news coverage, marketing and systems. After a sale in 1996 was on call for three years before returning full time in May of 1999. 

LEGISLATIVE ADVOCATE / PUBLISHING CONSULTANT               7 years 

Provided advertising, editorial, promotional and managerial guidance and assistance in  Washington, D.C. to Human Events weekly and their Capital Hill Graphics division, Public Service Research Council, Third Century Publishers, The Christian Freedom Foundation and to Congressman Burt L. Talcott (R-Salinas).  In Sacramento assisted the California Manufacturers Association (CMA), State Senator William E. Coombs (R-Rialto), and State Senate Minority Leader Fred Marler. Edited the weekly Legislative Report and successfully worked to eliminate the tax on inventories. Set up numerous seminars, conventions, legislative workshops, briefing sessions and press conferences.   

With the encouragement of Senators Coombs, Harmer, Marler and Richardson, led a Senate Aides group. Trained Senate staffers in media and constituent relations, established programs to facilitate integration of new Senate staff members.  Recruited speakers including lobbyists, Senate and Assembly officers, Constitutional staff specialists, key Reagan administrative staff and cabinet appointees to explain the complexities and requirements of this specialized culture.    

Rialto Publishing Company                                                           3 years 

Responsible for editing and publishing the Rialto Record, Bloomington News, Mountain Highlander and Timberline Journal weekly newspaper group in San Bernardino County, California.  Administered all aspects of these newspapers and related commercial printing business.  Began as Advertising Manager and supported the company through much growth and many changes through and including a very successful sale of the company.  

Prior to the above and concurrent with school:  

Grew up in the newspaper business in Southern California.  Began working at a very young age doing every conceivable job in the business including mailroom, janitorial, printer's devil, cub reporter, darkroom technician, caretaker of the stereotype/Linotype/Intertype lead, selling and delivering newspapers (street and routes) and soliciting ads. Actually wrote sports columns at age 13 and sold ads for the sports page. Wrote up classified ads, news stories, staffed the front counter, helped with ad layouts and much more.    

After college graduation was employed by Ridder Newspapers, then started a public relations and ad agency business.  Sold services and advertising programs to a wide variety of companies and individuals.  Assisted in the creation and scheduling of penetrating advertising campaigns.  Promoted positive company images and employee accomplishments and public services.  Clients included retailers, a savings and loan association, real estate companies, insurance brokers, a trade association, a shopping center and public figures.  These efforts, during these particular years, provided a significant and lasting, first hand education in economic reality and the positive and negative impacts of State and Federal policies on small businesses and individuals.
