CHAFE-PROŽ

Company History

Fjord, Incorporated was founded as a partnership in CY 1967 under the name of Fjord Nautical Instruments by Gail and Ed Ratigan.  At that time, Fjord manufactured a compact nautical range-finding analog calculator of its own design.  The calculator was primarily used for navigating the coasts and rivers of Southeast Asia where visual navigational aids were often limited.  Today the company is still run and managed by Gail, a veteran of many small boat ocean crossings, assisted by Ed, who is a master mariner in the merchant marine and a former Navy signalman and reserve line officer, and son Michael, who made his first ocean crossing under sail at the age of 7.

In CY 1991 Fjord developed the Chafe-ProŽ concept for protecting marine lines from chafe abrasion.  In 1995 Fjord was awarded a U.S. patent for Chafe-ProŽ's unique design and wrap-around-closing feature (i.e., the hook and loop).  In 1997 Fjord became incorporated in the state of North Carolina as a woman-owned small business entity.  To this day, all Chafe-ProŽ units are manufactured in North Carolina under our U.S. and EU registered trade name - Chafe-ProŽ.

Since the inception of Chafe-ProŽ, Fjord has continued to improve the product line.  To that end we have been successful, as Chafe-ProŽ is regarded today by many as the best marine chafe-protection device on the market.  We attribute that success to our customers, because we have listened to your suggestions; many of which we incorporated into the Chafe-ProŽ product line.  Our experienced design and manufacturing teams also have an excellent reputation for quickly responding to customer request for special line-protection applications.  Please contact us relative to your particular line protection requirements.

Today, Chafe-ProŽ line and eye protectors are used on over 90% of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter fleet and on over 65 U.S. naval vessels as well as being used on many foreign naval vessels.  In addition, a large number of USCG shore stations use our yacht-grade units for their smaller vessels.  Chafe-ProŽ is also used by many U.S. and foreign-flag operated towing companies to protect their towing and ship assist lines.

Remember, if it isn't Chafe-ProŽ, it isn't the real thing!
