Snowplants are not white but flaming red. Since they feed on decaying vegatation, they do not need green leaves for photosynthesis; hence they appear right after the snow melt. They are both the first plant and the most colorful plant of the Sierra. A plant worthy of its protection by the State of California. Its stature is comparable to the climber's minarets, cathedrals, peaks, towers, domes, needles, faces, gorges, horns and aretes of the Sierra. Climbers must fantasize about ascending them.

The "Snowplant Ribbons" image is part of the Sealth body of work which are digital images of landscapes, scenics, and the human form and are based on locations in the Crane Flat, Yosemite National Park, Western Sierra, High Sierra and Central Coast of California.
