I had the same problem with a Westach CHT that was a few years old. The problem turned out to be a film of dark-colored oxidation on the pins at the back of the instrument. Pull the connectors off the pins, and if the pins look dark, shine them up with some fine sandpaper - I used 400 grit wet/dry paper. Put the wires back on - you did remember what color wire goes to what pin, right? :-) If it still doesn't work, try swapping the wires. If that doesn't work, try an ohm-meter and/or a propane torch on the sender, as others have suggested. If the sender checks out, try applying the ohm-meter to the pins on the back of the instrument - one polarity or the other should make the needle move, because an ohm-meter applies a voltage. I would turn the meter to the highest resistance setting, to limit the current through the meter. Note, I haven't actually tried this. Or, you could solve the problem the way I did: order a brand new EGT/CHT gauge and brand new senders, install, start the engine, see that they work. Then try putting old parts back until it stops working. Find out all you really needed to do was shine up the pins on the back of the instrument. Sigh! Well, I needed an EGT gauge anyway, and now I have dual CHT guages, in case one stops working sometime... While we're discussing gauges - why does the Tiny Tach always read 7470 rpm anymore? I tried opening the case to see if there is a battery that needs replacing, but a previous owner glued it shut. Suggestions? And if I ever get flying, then I'll *really* be having fun!
