I thought this method of guesstimating windspeed might be helpful to some of y'all if your caught in an area with no windsock and need to know the approximate windspeed. It's called the Beaufort Wind Scale. TERM WINDSPEED (mph) VISUAL AFFECT Calm <1 Calm, smoke rises vertically. Light air 1-3 Direction of wind shown by smoke, but not by wind vane. Light breeze 4-7 Wind felt on face, leaves rustle, wind vane moves. Gentle Breeze 8-12 Leaves and small twigs in constant motion and wind extends a small flag. Moderate breeze 13-18 Wind raises dust, and loose paper and small branches move. Fresh Breeze 19-24 Small-leaved trees begin to sway, crested wavelets form on inland waters. Strong Breeze 25-31 Large branches move, overhead wires whistle and unbrellas are difficult to control. Tim Adams
