The Great Earthquake
"There was a Great Earthquake, the sun turned Black,
the moon became like blood, the stars fell, the sky split open,
the mountains and islands were moved, the day of wrath arrives."
- Ps. 18:7-15,
- Then the earth shook and quaked; And the foundations of
the mountains were trembling And were shaken, because He was angry.
Smoke went up out of His nostrils, And fire from His mouth devoured;
Coals were kindled by it. He bowed the heavens also, and came
down With thick darkness under His feet. And He rode upon
a cherub and flew; And He sped upon the wings of the wind. He
made darkness His hiding place, His canopy around Him, Darkness
of waters, thick clouds of the skies. From the brightness before
Him passed His thick clouds, Hailstones and coals of fire.
The Lord also thundered in the heavens, And the Most High uttered
His voice, Hailstones and coals of fire. And He sent out His arrows,
and scattered them, And lightning flashes in abundance, and routed
them. Then the channels of water appeared, And the foundations
of the world were laid bare At Thy rebuke, O Lord, At the blast
of the breath of Thy nostrils.
- Ps. 46:1-7,
- God is our refuge and strength, A very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change,
And though the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; Though
its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling
pride. Selah.
There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, The
holy dwelling places of the Most High. God is in the midst of
her, she will not be moved; God will help her when morning dawns.
The nations made an uproar, the kingdoms tottered; He raised
His voice, the earth melted. The Lord of hosts is with us;
The God of Jacob is our stronghold. Selah.
- PS. 68:1-10
- Let God arise, let His enemies be scattered; And let
those who hate Him flee before Him. As smoke is driven away, so
drive them away; As wax melts before the fire, So let the wicked
perish before God. But let the righteous be glad; let them exult
before God; Yes, let them rejoice with gladness. Sing to God,
sing praises to His name; Lift up a song for Him who rides through
the deserts, Whose name is the Lord, and exult before Him. A father
of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy
habitation. God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the
prisoners into prosperity, Only the rebellious dwell in a parched
land., when Thou didst go forth before Thy people, When Thou didst
march through the wilderness, Selah.
The earth quaked; The heavens also dropped rain at the presence
of God; Sinai itself quaked at the presence of God, the God of
Israel. Thou didst shed abroad a plentiful rain, O God; Thou
didst confirm Thine inheritance, when it was parched. Thy creatures
settled in it; Thou didst provide in Thy goodness for the poor,
O God.
- Isa. 13:1-14,
- The oracle concerning Babylon which Isaiah the son of Amoz
saw. Lift up a standard on the bare hill, Raise your voice to
them, Wave the hand that they may enter the doors of the nobles.
I have commanded My consecrated ones, I have even called My mighty
warriors, My proudly exulting ones, To execute My anger. A sound
of tumult on the mountains, Like that of many people! A sound
of the uproar of kingdoms, Of nations gathered together! The Lord
of hosts is mustering the army for battle. They are coming from
a far country From the farthest horizons, The Lord and His instruments
of indignation, To destroy the whole land. Wail, for the day of
the Lord is near! It will come as destruction from the Almighty.
Therefore all hands will fall limp, And every man's heart will
melt. And they will be terrified, Pains and anguish will take
hold of them; They will writhe like a woman in labor, They will
look at one another in astonishment, Their faces aflame. Behold,
the day of the Lord is coming, Cruel, with fury and burning
anger, To make the land a desolation; And He will exterminate
its sinners from it. For the stars of heaven and their constellations
Will not flash forth their light; The sun will be dark when it
rises, And the moon will not shed its light. Thus I will punish
the world for its evil, And the wicked for their iniquity; I will
also put an end to the arrogance of the proud, And abase the haughtiness
of the ruthless. I will make mortal man scarcer than pure gold,
And mankind than the gold of Ophir. Therefore I shall make
the heavens tremble, And the earth will be shaken from its place
At the fury of the Lord of hosts In the day of His burning anger.
And it will be that like a hunted gazelle, Or like sheep with
none to gather them, They will each turn to his own people, And
each one flee to his own land.
- Isa. 30:27-32
- Behold, the name of the Lord comes from a remote place; Burning
is His anger, and dense is His smoke; His lips are filled with
indignation, And His tongue is like a consuming fire And His breath
is like an overflowing torrent, Which reaches to the neck, To
shake the nations back and forth in a sieve, And to put in the
jaws of the peoples the bridle which leads to ruin. You will
have songs as in the night when you keep the festival; And gladness
of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute, To go
to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel. And the
Lord will cause His voice of authority to be heard. And the descending
of His arm to be seen in fierce anger, And in the flame of a consuming
fire, In cloudburst, downpour, and hailstones. For at the
voice of the Lord Assyria will be terrified, When He strikes
with the rod. And every blow of the rod of punishment, Which
the Lord will lay on him, Will be with the music of tambourines
and lyres; And in battles, brandishing weapons, He will fight
them.
- Eze. 32:7-11,
- "And when I extinguish you, I will cover the heavens,
and darken their stars; I will cover the sun with a cloud, And
the moon shall not give its light. All the shining lights in the
heavens I will darken over you And will set darkness on your land,"
Declares the Lord God. I will also trouble the hearts of many
peoples, when I bring your destruction among the nations, into
lands which you have not known. And I will make many peoples appalled
at you, and their kings shall be horribly afraid of you when
I brandish My sword before them; and they shall tremble every
moment, every man for his own life, on the day of your fall."
For thus says the Lord God, "The sword of the king of Babylon
shall come upon you."
- Eze. 38:14-23,
- "Therefore, prophesy, son of man, and say to Gog, 'Thus
says the Lord God," On that day when My people Israel are
living securely, will you not know it? And you will come from
your place out of the remote parts of the north, you and many
peoples with you, all of them riding on horses, a great assembly
and a mighty army; and you will come up against My people Israel
like a cloud to cover the land. It will come about in the last
days that I shall bring you against My land, in order that the
nations may know Me when I shall be sanctified through you before
their eyes, O Gog. " 'Thus says the Lord God, "Are you
the one of whom I spoke in former days through My servants the
prophets of Israel, who prophesied in those days for many years
that I would bring you against them? And it will come about on
that day, when Gog comes against the land of Israel," declares
the Lord God, "that My fury will mount up in My anger. And
in My zeal and in My blazing wrath I declare that on that day
there will surely be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.
And the fish of the sea, the birds of the heavens, the beasts
of the field, all the creeping things that creep on the earth,
and all the men who are on the face of the earth will shake at
My presence; the mountains also will be thrown down, the steep
pathways will collapse, and every wall will fall to the ground.
And I shall call for a sword against him on all My mountains,"
declares the Lord God. "Every man's sword will be against
his brother. And with pestilence and with blood I shall enter
into judgment with him; and I shall rain on him, and on his
troops, and on the many peoples who are with him, a torrential
rain, with hailstones, fire, and brimstone. And I shall magnify
Myself, sanctify Myself, and make Myself known in the sight of
many nations; and they will know that I am the Lord."
- Joel 2:1-11,
- Blow a trumpet in Zion, And sound an alarm on My holy
mountain! Let all the inhabitants of the land tremble, For
the day of the Lord is coming; Surely it is near, A day
of darkness and gloom, A day of clouds and thick darkness. As
the dawn is spread over the mountains, So there is a great
and mighty people; There has never been anything like it, Nor
will there be again after it To the years of many generations
A fire consumes before them, And behind them a flame burns. The
land is like the garden of Eden before them, But a desolate wilderness
behind them, And nothing at all escapes them. Their appearance
is like the appearance of horses; And like war horses, so they
run.
- Joel 3:1-17
- "For behold, in those days and at that time, When I restore
the fortunes of Judah and Jerusalem, I will gather all the
nations, And bring them down to the valley of Jehoshaphat. Then
I will enter into judgment with them there On behalf of My people
and My inheritance, Israel, Whom they have scattered among
the nations; And they have divided up My land. They have also
cast lots for My people, Traded a boy for a harlot, And sold a
girl for wine that they may drink. Moreover, what are you to Me,
O Tyre, Sidon, and all the regions of Philistia? Are you rendering
Me a recompense? But if you do recompense Me, swiftly and speedily
I will return your recompense on your head. "Since you have
taken My silver and My gold, brought My precious treasures to
your temples, and sold the sons of Judah and Jerusalem to the
Greeks in order to remove them far from their territory, behold,
I am going to arouse them from the place where you have sold them,
and return your recompense on your head. Also I will sell your
sons and your daughters into the hand of the sons of Judah, and
they will sell them to the Sabeans, to a distant nation,"
for the Lord has spoken. Proclaim this among the nations: Prepare
a war; rouse the mighty men! Let all the soldiers draw near, let
them come up! Beat your plowshares into swords, And your pruning
hooks into spears; Let the weak say, "I am a mighty man."
Hasten and come, all you surrounding nations, And gather yourselves
there. Bring down, O Lord, Thy mighty ones. Let the nations
be aroused And come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat, For there
I will sit to judge All the surrounding nations Put in the sickle,
for the harvest is ripe. Come, tread, for the wine press is full;
The vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. Multitudes,
multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of the Lord
is near in the valley of decision. The sun and moon grow dark,
And the stars lose their brightness. And the Lord roars from Zion
And utters His voice from Jerusalem, And the heavens and the earth
tremble. But the Lord is a refuge for His people And a stronghold
to the sons of Israel. Then you will know that I am the Lord
your God, Dwelling in Zion My holy mountain. So Jerusalem
will be holy, And strangers will pass through it no more.
- Amos 8:1-10
- Thus the Lord God showed me, and behold, there was a basket
of summer fruit. And He said, "What do you see, Amos?"
And I said, "A basket of summer fruit." Then the Lord
said to me, "The end has come for My people Israel. I will
spare them no longer. The songs of the palace will turn to wailing
in that day," declares the Lord God. "Many will be
the corpses; in every place they will cast them forth in silence.
Hear this, you who trample the needy, to do away with the humble
of the land, When will the new moon be over, So that we may sell
grain, And the sabbath, that we may open the wheat market, To
make the bushel smaller and the shekel bigger, And to cheat with
dishonest scales, So as to buy the helpless for money And the
needy for a pair of sandals, And that we may sell the refuse of
the wheat?" The Lord has sworn by the pride of Jacob, "Indeed,
I will never forget any of their deeds. Because of this will
not the land quake And everyone who dwells in it mourn? Indeed,
all of it will rise up like the Nile, And it will be tossed about,
And subside like the Nile of Egypt. And it will come about in
that day," declares the Lord God, "That I shall make
the sun go down at noon And make the earth dark in broad daylight.
Then I shall turn your festivals into mourning And all your songs
into lamentation; And I will bring sackcloth on everyone's
loins And baldness on every head. And I will make it like a time
of mourning for an only son, And the end of it will be like a
bitter day.
- Zech. 14:1-9
- Behold, a day is coming for the Lord when the spoil
taken from you will be divided among you. For I will gather
all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city
will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished, and
half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be
cut off from the city. Then the Lord will go forth and fight
against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle.
And in that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives,
which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives
will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large
valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north
and the other half toward the south. And you will flee by the
valley of My mountains, for the valley of the mountains will reach
to Azel; yes, you will flee just as you fled before the earthquake
in the days of Uzziah king of Judah. Then the Lord, my God,
will come, and all the holy ones with Him! And it will come about
in that day that there will be no light; the luminaries will dwindle.
For it will be a unique day which is known to the Lord, neither
day nor night, but it will come about that at evening time there
will be light. And it will come about in that day that living
waters will flow out of Jerusalem, half of them toward the eastern
sea and the other half toward the western sea; it will be in summer
as well as in winter. And the Lord will be king over all the
earth; in that day the Lord will be the only one, and His name
the only one.
- Matt. 24:7-8,21-31
- "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.
But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs."
"But pray that your flight may not be in the winter, or on
a Sabbath; for then there will be a great tribulation, such
as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now,
nor ever shall. And unless those days had been cut short, no life
would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days
shall be cut short. Then if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here
is the the Messiah,' or 'There He is,' do not believe him. For
false Christs and false prophets will arise and will show great
signs and wonders, so as to mislead, if possible, even the elect.
Behold, I have told you in advance. If therefore they say
to you, 'Behold, He is in the wilderness,' do not go forth, or,
'Behold, He is in the inner rooms,' do not believe them. For just
as the lightning comes from the east, and flashes even to the
west, so shall the coming of the Son of Man be. Wherever the
corpse is, there the vultures will gather. But immediately
after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened,
and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall
from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken, and
then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then
all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the
Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great
glory. And He will send forth His angels with a great trumpet
and they will gather together His elect from the four winds, from
one end of the sky to the other.
- Luke. 21:10-27
- Then He continued by saying to them, "Nation will
rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will
be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines;
and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.
But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you
and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons,
bringing you before kings and governors for My name's sake.
It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony. So make up
your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves; for
I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents
will be able to resist or refute. But you will be delivered up
even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they
will put some of you to death, and you will be hated by all on
account of My name. Yet not a hair of your head will perish. By
your endurance you will gain your lives. But when you see Jerusalem
surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is at
hand. Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,
and let those who are in the midst of the city depart, and let
not those who are in the country enter the city; because these
are days of vengeance, in order that all things which are written
may be fulfilled. Woe to those who are with child and to those
who nurse babes in those days; for there will be great distress
upon the land, and wrath to this people, and they will fall by
the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations;
and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Nations until
the times of the Nations be fulfilled. And there will be signs
in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth dismay among nations,
in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting
from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon
the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then
they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and
great glory.
- Hebr 12:22-29
- But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living
God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the
general assembly and Ones called out of the first-born who are
enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits
of righteous men made perfect, and to Jesus, the mediator of a
new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks better
than the blood of Abel. See to it that you do not refuse Him who
is speaking. For if those did not escape when they refused him
who warned them on earth, much less shall we escape who turn away
from Him who warns from heaven. And His voice shook the earth
then, but now He has promised, saying,"Yet once more I
will shake not only the earth, but also the heaven."
And this expression, "Yet once more," denotes
the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created
things, in order that those things which cannot be shaken may
remain. Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot
be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God
an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is
a consuming fire.
- Mark. 13:8,19-27
- For nation will arise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there
will also be famines. These things are merely the beginning of
birth pangs.
For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not
occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created,
until now, and never shall. And unless the Lord had shortened
those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of
the chosen whom He chose, He shortened the days. And then
if anyone says to you, 'Behold, here is the the Messiah'; or,
'Behold, He is there'; do not believe him; for false Messiahs
and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders,
in order, if possible, to lead the chosen astray. But take heed;
behold, I have told you everything in advance. But in those
days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the
moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from
heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.
And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great
power and glory. And then He will send forth the angels, and
will gather together His chosen from the four winds, from the
farthest end of the earth, to the farthest end of heaven.
- Acts 2:14-21
- But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice
and declared to them: "Men of Judea, and all you who live
in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give heed to my words.
For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the
third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken of through
the prophet Joel: 'And it shall be in the last days,' God
says, 'That I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind;
And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young
men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams; Even
upon My bondslaves, both men and women, I will in those days
pour forth of My Spirit And they shall prophesy. And I will grant
wonders in the sky above, and signs on the earth beneath, blood,
and fire, and vapor of smoke. the sun shall be turned into darkness,
and the moon into blood, before the great and glorious day of
the Lord shall come. And it shall be, that everyone who calls
on the name of the Lord shall be saved.'
The Earthquakes in the following Scriptures are the same and take place immediately before the Lord's return:
6th Seal: A Great Earthquake
- Rev 6:12-17
- And I looked when He broke the sixth seal, and there was
a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth made
of hair, and the whole moon became like blood; and the stars of
the sky fell to the earth, as a fig tree casts its unripe figs
when shaken by a great wind. And the sky was split apart like
a scroll when it is rolled up; and every mountain and island were
moved out of their places. And the kings of the earth and
the great men and the commanders and the rich and the strong and
every slave and free man, hid themselves in the caves and among
the rocks of the mountains; and they said to the mountains and
to the rocks, "Fall on us and hide us from the presence of
Him who sits on the throne, and from the wrath of the Lamb; for
the great day of their wrath has come; and who is able to stand?
"
- Rev 8:1-5
- And when He broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven
for about half an hour. And I saw the seven angels who stand before
God; and seven trumpets were given to them. And another angel
came and stood at the altar, holding a golden censer; and much
incense was given to him, that he might add it to the prayers
of all the Ones set apart upon the golden altar which was before
the throne. 4 And the smoke of the incense, with the prayers of
the Ones set apart, went up before God out of the angel's hand.
And the angel took the censer; and he filled it with the fire
of the altar and threw it to the earth; and there followed peals
of thunder and sounds and flashes of lightning and an earthquake.
End of 2nd Woe: A Great Earthquake
- Rev 11:4-14,
- These are the two olive trees and the two lampstands that
stand before the Lord of the earth. And if anyone desires to harm
them, fire proceeds out of their mouth and devours their enemies;
and if anyone would desire to harm them, in this manner he must
be killed. These have the power to shut up the sky, in order that
rain may not fall during the days of their prophesying; and they
have power over the waters to turn them into blood, and to smite
the earth with every plague, as often as they desire. And when
they have finished their testimony, the beast that comes up out
of the abyss will make war with them, and overcome them and kill
them. And their dead bodies will lie in the street of the great
city which mystically is called Sodom and Egypt, where also their
Lord was crucified. And those from the peoples and tribes and
tongues and nations will look at their dead bodies for three and
a half days, and will not permit their dead bodies to be laid
in a tomb. And those who dwell on the earth will rejoice over
them and make merry; and they will send gifts to one another,
because these two prophets tormented those who dwell on the earth.
And after the three and a half days the breath of life from God
came into them, and they stood on their feet; and great fear fell
upon those who were beholding them. And they heard a loud voice
from heaven saying to them, "Come up here." And they
went up into heaven in the cloud, and their enemies beheld them.
And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of
the city fell; and seven thousand people were killed in the earthquake,
and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.
Behold, the second woe is past; the third woe is coming quickly.
Last (7th) Trumpet: Earthquake, Hail
- Rev 11:15-19
- And the seventh angel sounded; and there arose loud voices
in heaven, saying, "the kingdom of the world has become
the kingdom of our Lord, and of His the Messiah; and He will reign
forever and ever." And the twenty-four elders, who sit
on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped
God, We give You thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and
who wast, because You have taken Thy great power and have begun
to reign. And the nations were enraged, and Thy wrath came,
and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time
to give their reward to Thy bond-servants the prophets and
to the Ones set apart and to those who fear Thy name, the small
and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."
And the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark
of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes
of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake
and a great hailstorm.
Last (7th) Vial: A Great Earthquake
- Rev 16:17-21
- And the seventh angel poured out his bowl upon the air; and
a loud voice came out of the temple from the throne, saying, "It
is done." And there were flashes of lightning and sounds
and peals of thunder; and there was a great earthquake, such as
there had not been since man came to be upon the earth, so great
an earthquake was it, and so mighty. And the great city was split
into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell. And
Babylon the great was remembered before God, to give her the cup
of the wine of His fierce wrath. And every island fled away,
and the mountains were not found. And huge hailstones, about one
hundred pounds each, came down from heaven upon men; and men blasphemed
God because of the plague of the hail, because its plague was
extremely severe.
"Earthquakes in various places.
These are the beginnings of the birth pangs."
Birthpangs begin small with large time intervals, then increase
with intensity and with smaller time intervals, culminating in
the birth. We have earthquakes occurring more frequently, culminating
in the Great Earthquake.
- Matt. 24:7-8
- "For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against
kingdom, and in various places there will be famines and earthquakes.
But all these things are merely the beginning of birth pangs."
