Our discovery of the door mat with the texture that traps the
cat's old claw
sheath, doesn't unravel or come apart, stays flat and
in place on the carpet no matter how hard it's being scratched and clawed, was
serendipity.
It also
proved that cat behavior can be
changed!
In our case, we pretty much
ignored our
cat's savage reduction of a
portion of the carpet
and the other places that she decided to use as a
scratching post while we were living in a RV. When we decided
to
move back into a
house, we were rightly
concerned
that her
attitude
toward the RV carpet and furniture would be carried over into the house and
she
would attack an
antique oriental carpet that we were bringing out of
storage.
This caused us a little anxiety; so we went to the local pet store
and
bought cat scratching post furniture which we placed on the carpet in the
front room. Then we brought the cat inside, pointed to the scratching
post, and
watched as she ignored it
and went right to work on the carpet just as we feared.
The cat just would not go near the
scratching post furniture, much less scratch
it. Later, we put her outside on the porch and
saw her immediately start to work on the new door mat with her claws.
She seemed to really enjoy scratching and clawing it. Then, she laid
down on it with a look of ownership on her face. Light
bulbs lit up over our heads. We brought
the
door mat inside and put
it on
the rug. We called the cat and pointed to the door mat. She
looked at the mat for a moment, got on it, stretched
luxuriously,
and then she clawed it! And we mean CLAWED! After she got rid of
a couple of old claw sheaths, which were nicely
trapped in the texture of the mat, she laid down on it with that same look of
ownership she displayed when it was on the porch. Now, it has been over
two years since the cat has sunk a
claw into anything else in the house but
the mat on the carpet in the front room. If you love your cat AND the
carpet and furniture, and you are against declawing the cat, give
MEW'S MAT
a try.
The
cat will surely thank you!
