Village School Plaque

{a.k.a.: Closter Public School; Closter Jr./Sr. High School (CHS); Village Middle School}

Bas relief (3 dimentional) bronze 24" x 18" plaque

The plaque was presented to the CBOE on October 10, 1999 as a reminder of Closter's first public school. It is one part of a three piece Alumni memorial located in the Tenakill School atrium stairwell.

CLOSTER PUBLIC SCHOOL

In 1899 the schoolhouse property was bought from the

Bloomer family. The following year a two story, square plan,

Renaissance Revival style building was completed with 3

classrooms and an assembly room for grades K-8. In 1907, 4

classrooms were added to the south side. In 1912, 6 class-

rooms were added to the north side, expanding the school to

K-12. In 1921 the south end was again enlarged, and from

1929 to 1955 it was solely the Closter Jr./Sr. High School,

grades 7-12. From 1955 to 1996 it was the Village School,

grade's 6-8.

Sponsored by: The Alumni and Friends of the schools, 1999

(Note: The school was publicly sold in 1997 to Ms Kitty Fan Foo who first had plans of making it a Chinese cultural center and a second plan as a senior housing. Neither plan is active or ever got off the drawing board and again there is interest in repurchasing the school due to possibilities raised by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.) See item #13 (click here to get)
